My 34 year old daughter is pregnant with her 9th pregnancy - high risk. She had three first semester miscarriages and a second semester miscarriage before having surgery to remove a septum. After her surgery, she got pregnant and delivered preterm (33 weeks due to a placental abruption). The baby had a grade III bleed in the brain, developed hydrocephalus, had surgery to have a shunt put in place and then developed bacterial meningitis. When her son was five, she started trying to get pregnant again. She has since had three additional early miscarriages. It usually takes her a year or two to get pregnant. After an xray 1 1/2 years ago, She had surgery again because the dr. thought she might have some septum left. There was no residual septum left, but she was told that her uterus is slight bicornuate. The dr. did not find any reason for the last three miscarriages. She is now 9 weeks 3 days pregnant. She had an ultrasound done at 6 weeks 5 days and was told that everything looked great. The heart rate was 128 via ultrasound. She saw her dr. last week when she was 8 weeks 5 days and the dr. could not pick up a heart rate with an early Doppler. The dr. told her the cervix is closed and the baby is on the left side. The dr. said that everything looked good, but not to worry about the heartbeat not being picked up via the doppler because it is early and her uterus is really tipped. She was referred to a high risk dr. Today, she saw the high risk dr's nurse practioner for the first time. My daughter really didn't feel very good about the appt. because the dr. didn't seem to be very optomistic. She said that at 9 weeks 3 days (today) she should have picked up a heartbeat with an early doppler. My daughter is frantic! I have read so many different things on the internet on when the doppler should pick up the hearbeat and when we should worry. I believe my daughter is going to ask for another ultrasound. Is it possible that with a bicornuate uterus and a uterus that is really tipped, not to be able to pick up the heartbeat at 9 weeks 3 days with an early Doppler and everything still be ok? Thanks.
