Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy plans to announce Friday that he'll switch parties and run for governor of New York as a Republican, the New York Times reports. The Long Islander will compete for his new party's nomination against former Rep. Rick Lazio, who has been campaigning for governor since last September. Though some Republicans have embraced the idea of a Levy candidacy, he'll face one challenge coming out of the gate: because his change in party registration won't take effect until after November, he'll have to gather more than 50 percent support at the state Republican Party's June convention in order to make it onto the primary ballot.
