The race for retiring Tennessee Democrat John Tanner's seat is shaping up to be a big-spending contest on both sides, as the leading Democratic and Republican candidates posted major cash-on-hand totals at the end of the first quarter of 2010. Democratic state Sen. Roy Herron's campaign announced Tuesday that Herron had brought in almost $500,000 in the first three months of the year and ended March with more than a million dollars in the bank. That news follows Republican farmer Stephen Fincher's announcement that he raised $340,000 over the same period and had about $820,000 on hand.
