Michael Heath, the former head of a social conservative group in Maine, ended his independent campaign for governor Thursday just days after entering the race. Heath cited the difficulty of gathering 4,000 signatures by June 1 to qualify for the general election ballot. Five Democrats and seven Republicans have filed to run for their respective parties' nominations.
