  • IUI Question

I have been trying to get pregnant for 2 years with no success. My husban and I have been tested twice and everything is normal. I am 37 (38th June 13th) and my husband is 41.

I had an IUI in march 09 and it did not work and I have another one May 7th and I am still waiting to know the results (June 4th)

My question about IUI is the following

I started my IUI May 9th with Menopur 75 for 3 days. Then it was increseased to 175 for 7 days more. I had bloodwork and ultrasound frequently during this time to mesure the follicles. The following monday May 18th I went for another blood work and ultrasound to determine if I needed another Menopur shot or if I had to do the Ovidrel that night and do insemination tuesdya and wenedsday. When I went on monday the Dr. determined that I needed another Menopur and comeback on tuesday morning for another bloodwork and ultrasound to see what was the next step.
When I go on tuesday to see if that night I had to do the Ovidrel, for our surprise 2 eggs from one side were gone (by the way I had 2 on each side). Since 2 eggs supposely were released, the same tuesday morning I had to go home inmediately do the Ovidrel shot, collect my husban's sperm and go back to his office to perform the IUI.
They did another bloodwork and because the levels went down they did not perfomed another IUI on wednesday.

I just want to know what happened on this scenario.

To give you a little more detail

The friday before the sise of the follicles were around 15 and 16

Monday they were between 16 and 17.That's why the Dr. wanted them to reach 18.

On tuesday when 2 eggs were gone, the other 2 eggs were 18 and 19.

Are my chances of success the same?
Why do yo think the eggs were released before time?

    I would appreciate you input

    DK

    Hi,

Eggs can ovulate before we want them to ovulate (up to 25% of the time), and that's why we use medications such as Lupron, Cetrotide, or Ganirelix. It sounds from what you wrote that you may have ovulated before the Ovidrel shot -- Which of the above drugs did you use to prevent premature ovulation???

We can tell if someone did or didn't ovulate prior to IUI by testing their blood progesterone level on the day we tell them to take the Ovidrel shot -- What was your progesterone level the day of your Ovidrel shot?

I'm looking forward to your responses to my above questions. Also let me know if you're seeing a board certified RE for your treatments.

    Thanks,

      IUI response

      Hi
Thanks for your response. By the way I got my period today I will take the pregnancy test on thursday just because.

To response to your questions. The only medications I too was Menopur 75 for 3 days and 150 for 7 days; and Ovidrel the same morning I had the Ovidrel.

The reason I took the Ovidrel the same morning of the IUI was because by monday morning the follicles had not reached 18 yet. The Dr. told me to take another menopur monday night and go back tuesday morning for another bloodwork and ultrasoud. That morning is when the Dr finds out that two eggs were gone. That`s why the Dr decides to perform the IUI the same morning. I had to go home, take the Ovidrel shot and go back to the office with my husband's semen for the IUI. I got the result of the bloodwork around noon and they said that because the level went down I did not need another IUI.

I will find out my progesteron level to let you know.

The Dr. is suppose to be well recognized in Boca Raton.

My new question is, if my ovulation happened before the Ovidrel shot, I still had two eggs to be released after the shot; and my understanding is thet the eggs can be around for 24 to 48 hours. It means the the IUI was not done late? Do you think it was too late to perform the IUI?

My husband keeps asking me if problably the shell of my eggs are too hard for the sperm to penetrate and fertilize it. Is it possible? Maybe the quality of my eggs is not good. Is there anything I can do?

      Thanks,

      DK

        Hi DK,

I practice in the Boca area and can tell you there are no well recognized RE's in Boca, and there are no board certified infertility specialists based in Boca, either.

You should consider a second opinion with a Board Certified RE (infertility specialist). If you're in the Boca area, you're certainly welcome to come here (I'm the ONLY board certified Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility Specialist whose practice is based on all of Palm Beach County). Your records should be reviewed in advance of your second opinion consultation so that it can/should become clear as to what happened with you.

I'm still wondering what drugs (if any) were used with you to prevent disastrous premature ovulation....

          Iui

          Hi

As I said, I only took Menopur and Ovidrel. I guess I did not take any madication to avoid early ovulation.

Is there a way to find out the quality of my eggs. I am 37 years old.
My husband and I have been tested twice and everything is normal, but I have read about the quality of the eggs (the hardening of the shell)

The other thing is and IUI is expensive and I can't afford another one. I have done it twice. My Dr. had Capital One and they are not financing anymore.

Does your office have any financial assistant program for In Vitro?

          Thanks,

          DK

            Hi DK,

Yes, we have blood tests and ultrasound examinations to determine egg quality/quantity. We do this on all of our fertility patients to determine if they have good eggs or bad, lots of eggs of few, and what treatment will be best to ensure the best possible outcome. We do these tests before they undergo treatments such as IUI or IVF.

We do have a financing program for In-vitro, and it has replaced the Capital One program. If you're interested in scheduling a visit to see me, please feel free to call us at 561-333-8232.

            All my best,

              Hi

I was talking to my husband and we would like to do more testing. Even we have been tested twice and the tests say everything is normal something has to be happenning.

I already had the fallopian tube test done to determine if my tubes were open and they are.

We would like to test my eggs to determine the quality.

When in the cycle I have to take those test? at the beginning of my next cycle?
              Thanks

              DK

In order to do the tests here, you would need a consultation first. Then, we would perform the blood tests and ultrasound on the second, third, or fourth day of your menstrual cycle.
