  • How soon after ovulation does the follicle fill with blood?

Is it pretty much immediately? Does the blood go away in time after ovulation?

I had my "release" ultrasound this morning, 24 hours after my IUI. I had one big follicle (31mm) on Sunday morning. This morning, there was a big gray sac on the screen. The ultrasound tech at my RE's office said that this was good, it meant that ovulation had occurred because the follicle was now filled with blood.

I had a very poorly timed IUI back in March, for some reason I did not ovulate after the HCG shot for a couple of days and so my IUI was not timed well. So this time, I am paranoid.

Thank you in advance, Dr. Roseff!

It varies, Daffodil, and in fact isn't always obvious on ultrasound. Indeed, once a follicle ovulates/ruptures, the structure doesn't have to fill with blood at all....

    Hope this helps,
