  • Confused, Confused, Confused!

    Dr. Roseff,
My regular OBGyn and I just in the beginning stages of figuring out what is wrong with me-if anything-but here's my problem:
I had a very early miscarriage in Oct. of this year. My husband and I were devistated with the lost and were eager to try for another baby in a month. I began charting my temperatures, noting the temperature rise around the 18th day every month. Like clockwork, I would get my period about 13 days after my temperature rise. Despite our charting efforts, we still have not had any luck concieving again.
Now, I went to the doctor for my regular exam, but I was concerned that my temps had not risen dispite my period being due in a week. I expressed my concern to my doctor, and his response was that I needed to stop charting temps because it's not somthing that he really talks about with his patients, and that it is just making me stressed.
Well, now my period is 2 weeks late-somthing that has never happened to me in my life-so I decided to chech my temp. Sure enough, first thing in the moning my temp was 98.4 (my usual temp after ovulation) and has remained in th "98" zone for four days now.
Based on my late period, my dictor suspected that I may not be ovulating, so he put me on provera to "jump start" my cycle. My question is, if my temps have risen, is that not a clear indication of ovulation?? I dont know when the jump occured, as I had followed the advise of my doc for two weeks and not checked mmy temps. Should I take the provera still, or will my period be here any day?
    Thank you so much,
    Paige

    Hi Paige,

Sorry to hear about your loss and sorry to hear you're not seeing a reproductive endocrinologist....

I tell my patients not to take their temps, too, as it's stressful and often inaccurate. Throw away your BBT stuff, try to listen to your Gyn or see a board certified RE. I just don't place much belief in temperature charts....

Stress can block ovulation, so if you're very stressed over your most recent turn(s) of events, that can possibly block ovulation all by itself. If someone doesn't ovulate ONE month only, I don't generally place her on Clomid as it may be a "fluke" that she didn't ovulate that one month....

      Still confused...

Thank you so much for you advice.
I guess my next question would be, if I am not pregnant, and I totally miss my period this month, does that mean that I am not fertil until I recieve a period...however far in the future that may be?

Sorry you're still confused. If you don't get a period in one month (but do get it regularly every month before and after that), it doesn't necessarily mean there's a fertility problem. A woman's most fertile time is about 2 weeks BEFORE she would get a period.

        Hope this helps,
