  • natural cycle egg w/icsi

    Hi Dr Roseff,

    Ref IVF -if a wrong protocol has been done that goofs up the egg quality, then why does the RE not remove a single egg produced in the natural cycle and get icsi done?
    This way at least the egg produced naturally would be of good quality even if the egg qty is only 'one' unlike with the medication that produces large qty of eggs?
    Also the cost for the above would go down. Don't you think this would be a better option and also cheaper?
    This is just my thought. let me know yr views.

    Thanks

    Hi,

    There are risks to an egg retrieval. The success rate for IVF with one egg is generally very, very low (not every egg will necessarily fertilize, not every fertilized egg will necessarily become an embryo, and not every embryo will necessarily grow for at least 3 days to a stage of development suitable for embryo transfer). Given this, the likelihood of embryo transfer after a single egg retrieval is very low. Therefore the potential risks of doing a single egg retrieval may outweigh the potential benefits.

    Hope this makes sense,

      some Qs

      Hi Dr Roseff,

      Thank you for yr reply.

      1-Why is there risk involved in egg retrieval ?

      2-I am curious to know the below queries:
      -is it possible to have a dead egg inside a follicle?
      -when ovulation takes place , can it happen that the fambrea reflex misses to catch the egg and the egg falls into the abdoman?
      - What are the causes for a woman to sometimes release premature eggs and how can this be avoided?

      Thanks in advance for yr replys.

        Hi,

        To answer:

        1-Why is there risk involved in egg retrieval ?
        ==> Anesthesia is given, and while it's rare, one can die under anesthesia. During the egg retrieval, a needle punctures the back of the vagina and enters the pelvic cavity. This can result in complications including, and not limited to, hemorrhage, infection, sepsis, and perforation of the urinary bladder and intestines.

        2-I am curious to know the below queries:
        -is it possible to have a dead egg inside a follicle?
        ==> Yes.
        -when ovulation takes place , can it happen that the fambrea reflex misses to catch the egg and the egg falls into the abdoman?
        ==> Yes.
        - What are the causes for a woman to sometimes release premature eggs and how can this be avoided?
        ==> If you're referring to during an IVF cycle, we routinely use medicines that prevent this from happening 99% of the time. These medicines include (in the U.S.) Ganirelix, Cetrotide, and Lupron.

        Hope this helps,
