  • HSG w/ Cannulization Unsuccessful

    Hello,

I just had a FTR yesterday because both of my tubes are blocked proximally. I was told that there was about an 80% chance the procedure would be successful, but afterwards the doctor informed and and my husband that she could not unblock either of the tubes.

My next appt. with my RE isn't for a couple of weeks, but I'm not sure of my next steps. Is IVF the only option left for me to conceive? Should I consider surgery to remove the blocked tubes? What are my options? What should be by next steps?

Any advice you have will be helpful...

    Hi,

Please tell me what FTR stands for. For The Record, I have not heard the abbreviation before - LOL!

Sorry, maybe I confused the abbreviation. I thought it stood for Fallopian Tube Recannulizaton. If not that's what I meant.

Any any rate, thanks for your advice.

For someone with blocked tubes that a specialist said they could not recanalize, then it sounds like IVF may be an option as it bypasses the occluded tubes.

        Hope this helps,

So you wouldn't recommend surgery to remove the part of the tube that is occluded?

Our IVF program averaged a 71% pregnancy rate per cycle last year (national average was about 35%). Tubal reanastomosis surgery may not work and also may increase the risk of a subsequent ectopic/tubal pregnancy. I've recently seen several patients who went for tubal reversal surgery (to have sterilized tubes with blocked parts cut away and put back together) with very low success rates.... Many of these patients were treated by someone who was a "specialist" in putting blocked tubes back together....

            All my best,
