  • 41 yrs and 2 failed IVF's

Dr Fisch, I just turned 41 and have had 2 failed IVF's and 1 failed IUI in the last 9 months. Started out with IVF on Microdose Lupron/Follistim. Did this for 12 days and upon retrieval there were 8 eggs. Only 2 were mature and both fertilized using ICSI (low morph/motility). Both transferred at 3 days and BFN.

2 months later tried and IUI with similar protocol and negative response. Didn't think I'd try again but somehow scrambled enough money to continue. Started acupuncture 3 months ahead as well to increase my chances. This time I stimulated for 14 days, same dosages as above and 18 eggs retrieved. 11 mature and all fertilized. On day 5 they were all still there, and we transferred 6 blasts. RE told me chances were slim for pregnancy anyway so don't worry about having more than twins. The other 5 did not make it to freezing. Well, 12 days out and the blood test came back negative. For what it's worth, I passed clomid challenge with a 6, pretty good for my age. I also had a son naturally when I was 37 after 8 months of trying, so I didn't think I'd be going through all this.

Should I try again? Use Donor eggs? I'm not sure I'm emotionally ready to do this again, and financially we'd have to wait until the first of the year. I'd appreciate any thoughts you have, thanks.

At 41 it is definitiely a bigger challenge, but still not impossible to make it happen with your eggs. We use a completely different approach than most centers, focusing on limiting the exposure to male hormones. If you contact me directly, I would be happy to review your case with you in more detail.
