  • A reintroduction

I've finally carved out more time to work out. I avidly worked out when I was a teenager and in my 20's then career, etc. kicked in. Back in December, I switched out all "white" pastas for whole wheat, but then cut back the pasta altogether quite a bit. I also get organic fruit and veggies delivered weekly to my door (a huge box for $40). I used to have a delivery but there were mystery veggies in there and I would end up throwing some of it away. I'm glad I found this new place becuase I use up all of it for the week and then the next order comes in. I adapt the weekly menu depending on what is coming. So, this weekend, I made fresh salsa, guac, etc. but also always have great fruit for smoothies.
As far as exercise, I re-joined a club that I really really like it is affiliated with a hospital so the staff is very well informed and it is a comfortable atmosphere. I'm now 45 so my knees crunch from years on the dreaded stairmaster, etc. So, I've been focusing on low impact cardio activity. I logged 20 miles on the elliptical Thursday-Sunday. I use the Octane elliptical and I use it for an hour every time and add .5-1 mile every time I go and I keep my heart rate in the target range for a good 50 minutes (between 150-170 bpm). I have only lost a few pounds, but my clothes definitely feel different. I am meeting with a personal trainer on Tuesday as a free orientation. I know what I like to do with respect to cardio elliptical, but now I need some strength workout ideas (get as much out of it as possible per session). Plus my hip bones really hurt afterwards so I have to figure that out too.Anyway, sorry this is so long, but I'll be visiting here quite often. In fact since i logged 20 miles, my goal is to get to 50 logged so that I can "earn" a massage at the club

free massage sounds good - good luck!

I wish I had time to join a fitness club, the only real exercise I like to do is swimming, but carving out the time and no one here to watch DS if I do carve out the time is all but impossible. So I'm going to have to stick with walks on my days off and quick walks when I get home from work before DS gets home from school...

I hear ya. I did find a club that has childcare and the kids club also has machines that ds can do while he's in the club, plus there's a gym to play in. He also does homework or reads while I'm working out (usually at the most 1.5 hours). I've also tried to cut out weekly shopping trips to the grocery store (the fruit veggie door delivery has been a timesaver), and also soap.com for Target type stuff, delivered to my door, so I've been able to carve out 2 hours weekly of that kind of stuff for errand running that is so time consuming. I also figure that if I do better menu planning, it eliminates sitting down at a restaurant once or twice a week, which then I reallocate to going to the gym instead. Plus, the gym has a cafe so I always have that option if I don't have food at the house..

Good luck with the working out.. I have learned to love weight training and do it 4 times a week now with a trainer for 30 min.
