  • Pregnancy with RLS

    Dr Cusick,

I will be 40 this year and am getting married again after the horrible loss of my first husband. We would like to try to have a child but are concerned with a few things. Aside from my age, I am healthy except for a severe case of Restless Leg Syndrome. I have it 24/7 and must be medicated in order to rest or sleep. If I am not medicated, I cannot sleep or even sit down. I am in constant movement. The longest I have gone is for 72 hours, at which time I was in such distress physically and emotionally. It was horrible. I currently take Requip to manage my RLS and it works very well. However I know it is a category C medication that cannot be taken during pregnancy. I am told the best and safest medication to take for RLS during Pg is methodone. But I am worried about the withdrawl effects on the baby.

How would you recommend handling this? I am not pregnant yet. I want to plan it carefully for the health of the baby and myself.

    Thanks for your help

    Sarah sorry for your lose

Like many drugs, we have little info on requip use during pregnancy- people are cautioned to use only as indicated after consideration of the indiviudal circumstance, risk/benefit anaylsis, availability of alternative therapies- what data that is available does not suggest an increased risk for problems in pregnancy, however the collective experience is small

If your concerns are related mostly to birth defects, you could forego medicine during the 1st 10-12 weeks of pregnancy, resume as needed after

    Talk, work with your doc
