I know it won't fly politically, but I really think this would be a good time to institute a significant gas tax. Oil prices are down drastically, which was FINALLY changing behavior towards mass transit, buying homes closer to work, and generally driving less.

Oil prices ...

I paid $2.97 last night! But I just read yesterday that the lower gas prices are not really spurring people to drive more. I'd like to think these new habits we've all developed are permanent but I suspect we'll all slip back into our old ways if prices stay down. But you know, I remember when the idea of $3.00 a gallon was hugely shocking. So I don't see the prices as being that low. The other problem is that heating oil is still very high. There's a bit of a fuss about this in NY. Schumer is accusing the heating oil companies of gouging. I still want to sue my oil company for scheduling a delivery at the end of May so they could get in one last lick of billing me $4.59 per gallon. With a 500 gallon tank I am STILL paying that bill off.
