  • Question about Avandia....m

    Hi everyone!
I've lurked on the PCOS BB but haven't really posted. I've known I've had PCOS for about 11 years. I've been on met xr for several years now with no problems but all of a sudden my liver function numbers have started to rise. My Dr took me off met to see if the numbers go down and they have. He wants to put me on Avandia because it doesn't work through the liver apparently. He's not an RE but has some endocrine background so I've been okay with him until now. I have an appointment with the RE I used for ttc since I think it's time to go to someone who knows more about PCOS.

I guess I want to have some ideas for treatment/management of PCOS and all the lovely symptoms I have when it's not controlled....plus the health risks. We're done with our family and I'm not ttc. I've heard not good things about Avandia but my Dr said they were blown way out of proportion and it's safe....I'm just not sure.
Does anyone have any thoughts or wisdom for me??

    Thanks!
    Joey

I thought there were some problems with Avandia. I wouldn't see an RE but an endocrinologist. That is who prescribes my met xr and monitors me.

I still take met even though we are done ttcing too.

    good luck

Thanks, I'll look into the Endo...m

I already have an appt with my old RE. One of her specialties is PCOS and her office said she handles "maintenance" of it. We'll see how the appt goes. In the meantime I'll try to find an endocrinologist in case I don't like what she says.
I'm scared to be off met for fear of the the pcos symptoms. I'm confused about how it affects the liver (according to my Dr) or doesn't as the Dr on the pcos medical board told me.
Thanks for confirming my questions on Avandia. I'll definitely do some more research.

      Joey

Welcome Joey -- you might want to ask Dr. Williams on the medical forum for PCOS.

my daughter was concieved via Avandia (child ment)

Seriously. We had done the clomid, the met + clomid, and then back to clomid alone. Wasnt responding at all and the met killed me, so we started checking into adoption and I was put on avandia to control the pcos. 5 weeks later ... well, I guess you know the rest of the story. She's 4 now!
BTW- one of the side effects is ovulation in women who dont ovulate! So if you are done having children, talk to your doc about prevention.
