  • What would you do.....

Holt has his IEP meeting next month. He only attends special needs preschool 2x a week for 2 hrs. He does attend a MMO program at a church 2 days a week for 3 hrs. The problem is that none of the MMO programs I have checked into will accept a 3 year old for next school year(starts early August) that is not potty trained. We are not talking about occasional accidents, but no interest, no matter what. I have tried no bottoms, underwear, reward chart, scheudle-he will not even sit on the potty. Wanted to add he is almost 3.5, and I do think we will make progress by his 4th birthday in October-but to be completely trained and self sufficient is doubtful by August.

I have not usually battled regarding placement, but I know they have a 4 hour program available. Should I see what they suggest than ask for the 4 hour? I was thinking 4 days a week.

Hi Trek, is the 4 hours 4 days a week thru the SN pre-school?

If that's the case, I would say go for it (as long as you're happy with the program). They should be used to the potty training issue, and hopefully supportive. I don't think 4 hours a day for 4 days a week is too hard on a 3.5 yo. And, it would provide you with some well earned free time! (What will you do with that time, lol)...

      Hugs! N

tough situation. What helped my dd when we were trying to train her was we had a family cruise scheduled for late August. She turned 3 in early May. I told her she couldn't go on the cruise with us unless she used the potty because they didn't have diapers on the ship. Well that was the surprise motivation she needed.

Is there some sensory, OT or PT issue connected with the potty training?

If possible I would keep him in the SN program.

Ellie trained right before her 4th bday. I really think her speech issues impeded her progress there, not to mention her sensory issues. I would see if you can qualify for the longer school program. We started 4 days a week at 3.5 as well.

Thanks ladies. He is very speech delayed, not yet talking at sentence level. He will sometimes when forced stand in front of the potty and pretend to pee. But he will not sit on a regular potty or even a potty chair. He does have sensory issues, but the county does not offer OT for sensory issues.
If he was in a regular MMO 3k room most of the programs are 5 days a week for 3 or 4 hrs.

We have tried telling him diapers are all gone, but if he understands, it does nto work. There is no incentive that has worked-yet. He is very stubborn abd headstrong. Still very much in the mine, doing it himself stage. I do know he will get it, but again doubtful before August.

I am not that impressed with county's offerings in the 3-5 range, but that is another post. I do think Holt needs more socialization than just 2 hrs though since he has been in a MMO program since 2006.

Just wanted to say that I sympathize with the potty situation. We were wondering if Madylin would be ablet o go to preschool this past year because she wasn't potty trained. This (PT'ing) has been an on-going, 1 1/2 year or so battle. I swear to you, she woke up one day in August (it was a Monday) and just started going on the toilet. I couldn't believe it. She had a few nighttime accidents here and there, but for the most part, since that day in August, she has been night and day trained.

The problem we are having now is with wiping. For some reason, all the sudden, she won't wipe We have tried alot of different things lik egetting the Kandoo wipes, making sure we are in there to help, making up a song....I thought maybe she was hurting down there (infection or something) but she says no. So I don't know what the deal is with that but we go through pants and panties like we did when we were trying to potty train her!

A year ago yu could have replaced Holt's name with Madylin's and it would have fit our potty situation exactly. They do get it eventually!

Should add, it was about 3 weeks before Madylin's 4th birthday that she *got* the potty. And our biggest issue was that she wasn't verbalizing either, so she couldn't even tell us if she had to go. She talked, but it was all echoing, no spontaneous speech. And nothing we did helped move things along....charts, rewards, stickers, M & M's, even opposite end...making her clean up her mess (we would have her use a mop to clean up pee), NOTHING worked. It was beyond frustrating. I was singing Hallelujia! when she finally got it, believe you me LOL!!!

                  :-)

Have you tried just putting him into underpants and dealing with the messes? With my dd, she was very slow to train and very uninterested. We finally put her into princess panties, told her she had to keep the princesses clean, and then set the timer for every 30 minutes. If she sat for 1 minute she got 1 chocolate chip (successful or not). 2 minutes, 2 chips. If she actually pee'd or poo'd in the potty, she got 5 chips. After 2 minutes, if nothing happened we just got up and so, "Oh well, maybe next time" and gave her the smaller treat.

It still took a while, but it was all low stress and high reward, so she got it. I'd say it took a month till she was actually being successful regularly, and then we scaled it back to going once an hour, and then eventually to her telling us or just going on her own.

With ds, it was much easier. We did the same thing, put him into underpants, tried every 30 minutes, gave lots of rewards. He was day trained in about 10 days and totally trained in 30 days. Not sure why he was so much easier (he has some sensory issues, but nothing like dd has).

I wish you lots of good luck. I know how hard training a reluctant kiddo is. Dd was 3.5 when she finally trained, and 4 before she was was really proficient and going on her own. It's not easy!

I think that is a good idea...

When my dd was 3, she went 5 days a week to the sn preschool. I don't think it was 4 hours, but with the bus ride, she went 5 days a week and was gone 4 hours. It was much harder on me than on her.

Yes, I have tried underwear. He seems not to care-he is in soaking wet undewear right now in fact. I cannot even get him near a toilet lately. I have tried candy-he lvoes Hersey's kisses to no avail. I even bought some Spongebob(a facorite character) undewear this past week.

LISAMAIRE~no I have not looked into Emory. I am okay with him taking the lead, I know he will start to go sometime by age 4. I am more concerned about Grant who still has accidents at 8.5 years of age and still wears pull up to bed.
