  • How do you travel with things that need to be cold?

We are going to FL in 2 weeks and I'm going to have to bring fish oil and the probiotics with us but they need to be kept cold. We are flying but you figure its still an all day event including trips to and from airport, car rental, baggage claim etc.

I don't want something else big to carry. I was thinking I might just keep the bag they sent the Kirkman stuff in today and put it in there that way I wouldn't have to travel with a cooler. We already have so much stuff to take.

This is the first year we aren't shipping anything to FL first. All has to go on the plane. The good thing is we won't have to bring booster seats with us. My mom got 1 from my sister and bought 2. She is going to meet us at the airport to help while we wait for everything. That helps a lot not to have to bring 3 seats.

I think I would transfer enough fish oil into a smaller container with a VERY secure lid (possibly tape it closed for the plane flight)... then wrap each bottle (the fish oils and the probiotics) in an ice pack just like the one they shipped with your probiotics, tape it to secure it around each product and then place both in the freezer overnight...

just before you leave, put them both in the package Kirkman sent you and put in one of the bags (preferably a carry on, like your purse (YIKES!)) so that you can make sure the fish oil stays upright... you could also wait until you get to FL for the fish oils and buy a smaller bottle at a healthfood store...

oh, oh, oh... instead of taking the whole bottle of probiotics, just repackage enough for your trip... that way if something goes wrong you haven't compromised the whole bottle...

    hope this helps!

p.s. just don't forget them... perhaps, make yourself a last minute packing list for things that have to wait just before you leave to be packed...

I am a little list crazy when we travel. Thats why I when I realized yesterday that I hadn't done anything I freaked out.

I will definitely bring enough for the trip only. I like your idea. I'll have to check with my mom - maybe she can get some fish oil for me and then I would only have to worry about the probiotics

Are you starting tomorrow? I hope they help. His day today wasn't quite as good as T, W or Th but still pretty good. There happened to be a 3 birthday parties at school between W and Th so lots of junk. That doesn't help. He is ok when its a small amount but I think there is a cumulative effect over several days of it all. Also by Friday he's tired after 3 other days of full school days.

      Keep me posted.

oh, yeah! The week after Easter was BAAAAD here... we told our dh's family NO CANDY, but did anyone listen???? of course not... everyone thinks my kids will be deprived of candy on any annual holiday... we are gonna have to check bags at the door, lol!

We started the Kirkman probiotics last night; so tonight he had his second dose... I'll be looking for the beginning of changes in a couple of weeks, but hoping to see them earlier...

GREAT idea on getting your mom to get the fish oils... perhaps to make sure he gets the right flavor, you could order some and have it mailed to your mom's...

good girl doing lists! I so need to do that... I bought myself a PDA last year and that has helped me some; I'm always losing paper, but I figured if I spent money on something, I would keep up with it... I REALLY need to get the daily planner my sil has... her ailing mother lives with her and she has said it is a godsend in keeping up with appointments and medications, both for her mom and for herself...

I'm still in shock about the veggie sausage (we also use veggie bacon)... we have been giving them to the kids 3-4 times a week... argh!

again, I really think you are on to something with the MSG... it makes me feel MISERABLE in the head... the best way to describe it is blecky and foggy if I'm lucky enough to escape a migraine...

if you are coming to SWFL, PLEASE let me know; we are in Naples...

Organizing wize. I just started using google calendar extensively. It has helped so much because I can use different colors for everyone. Its easy to add to and maintain. This month was so complicated I printed it out.

I do have a paper daytimer that I keep in my purse so I can schedule appt when out quickly. I use that too but the google calendar had all the different school calenders, family events, my events (i'm on the preschool and sisterhood membership boards), Barry's events (he is on the board of a men's club), etc. Check it out.

I just do my lists in Word and then print them out. I make tables to keep it looking neat and pretty. Each person gets a column. It helps me because I forget too much otherwise

Is there any reason you are giving the probiotics at night instead of the morning? just wondering because I was going to do it in the morning.

We are going to be in Boca, Weston and Boynton Beach Unfortunately all East coast.

oh, thanks for the google calendar idea... I'll check that out next!

actually we give it at night becuase that is the time we give his dose of magnesium powder... so we go ahead and mix his probiotic in with it... and now it has become a good ritual between him and dh... (he doesn't want mommy doing it anymore, waaaaaah!)... no really, it is easier too, because dh "bribes" him with a page in a whatever book they are reading to drink his "juice" if he decides all of a sudden that he doesn't want to drink it... his concoction actually tastes good, finally! and if he doesn't get his magnesium, he will not poop the next day and then a visciuos cycle of irritability begins...

i'm not getting to the final complete answer, lol... another reason at night... magnesium is a calmer, so it really helps the bedtime routine go better... so might as well get the probiotic in at the same time...

How will you get liquid on a carry-on?

Do you have to have an RX to bring liquid things in your carry on? I have no idea how I'd pack that. You might call the airline and double check about that. They are very picky about allowing liquids/gels on.

I am going to go to the store when we get them and buy the fish oil. I guess I'll throw out what I don't use because I'm not sure how I would get it home again.

Yes, liquids and gels have to be under 3 oz or require an RX.

To keep things cold I use an insulated (ladybug shaped ) lunch box and ice packs. I've never had a problem.

                    What we did...

Hi Karen - We flew to Florida two weeks ago. We had some perishables, including a cooked chicken. I put the chicken in a plastic bag, surrounded by an ice-pack, a cardboard box of Tabachnik's frozen soup, and a frozen sweet potato kugel. I packed it in my checked baggage (in a small duffle bag with handles) so that I wouldn't have to worry about lugging it onto the plane with me.

The chicken stayed cold. We refrigerated it when we arrived at our hotel room, and we were able to eat it for several days.

It sounds like you already have a good plan underway, but if you decide that you want to bring perishables with you to Florida, this might work for you.

                    Hope this helps.

Wow now that is impressive. You keep kosher right? Is that why you brought food or was it just to cut down on food costs.

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas.

Yeah. We keep kosher, and it also did cut down on food costs. It was not difficult, but I had never done this while traveling via airplane, so I wasn't sure if it was going to work out.

Wishing you and your family a joyous holiday. I hope you have good weather.

I have to fly across the country 4 times a year

With my son's growth hormone that must be kept cold. We use a insulated lunch box with two cooler packs. I usually add ice to it throughout the day and it seems to be okay. I haven't had any issues with security, but they do look in the bag.
