  • Ellie seems to be allergic to the world...

and I don't know what to do about it.

She's breaking out in hives nearly every day. She's allergic to something I can't figure out what. The only thing that is a constant is her being outside and in contact with grass. So I am thinking that is it. What a horrible thing to be allergic to.

She's on 3 different allergy meds and still is reacting. I just wrote down the number for the Duke pediatric allergy clinic, so I guess I will be making an appt there in the AM.

    Ugh. It is frustrating.

My guy has skin reactions to pollens in the air...

It seems to be over for him at the moment. He gets itchy in the grass even though his testing was neg to grasses. When I know the pollen counts are up, we try to stay in, and I keep all windows closed. However, if he plays outside, I try to get him to wear long pants and a light jacket. If it is too hot, I will wash his arms and legs off when he comes inside. Yeah my guys are on their allergy meds year round. I use his steroid cream and bathe and loation him. It all helps, but he will still on occasion scratch until he bleeds. It is a huge pain being allergic to the great outdoors.

Geesh, sorry to hear about the allergies.

I remember when my DH was getting hives all of the time and it took forever to figure it out. Our cat kept sneaking in and sleeping in our bed and he is allergic to cats now. Also, advil...
      scary stuff!

hope you get it figured out soon!!

      hugs!

        Oh poor baby!

Glad you will get her allergies checked out. It could be the grass or something she is eating too. Please keep us posted. How is she doing today?

My ds gets random hives too but not every day. What is she already taking? Have you done a food journal. It might be a food additive that you are missing. What has she tested positive for in the past.

My ds didn't test positive to anything but mold but always feel and looks better hwen he takes claritin each morning.

Another bizarre thing I found is Claritin doesn't work for him if I give it in the evening. It has to be in the morning to help.

It's the sun that is giving her hives.

I had to stop all supplements and vitamins for the summer. Her allergist though that might be making her sensitive or it could just be her body.

Of couse, my outside/pool loving kid is allergic to the sun. I swear, she can't catch a break sometimes.

Oh no! Did the allergist have any other suggestions? Maybe get her a rash guard (very thin nylon) to wear for the pool? Maybe stopping the supplements will help her sensitivity as the allergist thought. I hope that works.

And this might be a really stupid question but, how bad are the hives? I mean, is it mild enough that can she live with some itching in order to get the outside time that she loves? Or is it just bad for the body to tolerate that state of inflammation?

Wow. they make full length shirts and pants that can be worn in the sun that have sun protection in them. A big hat and sunglasses too. She might not be able to be in the pool as much but at least she could go outside.

I know there are bathing suits with sun coverage too maybe you can find a long one.

                how awful.

Thanks for the suggestions. Luckily we haven't had an outbreak since I last posted. She was in the pool a lot too last weekend. I am wondering if it was the vitamins or a supplement.

The best thing for it is sunscreen. I am using spf 70 on her, instead of our normal 45. I didn't usually put it on unless we were out in the sun for more then 15 minutes, but that has changed and it seems to be helping. Plus as her skin gets used to the sun, it will slow the reaction down.

The hives didn't bother her too much but I am still hoping her skin has adjusted enough.
