  • visual motor integration -- please help me understand

    Hi all,

I have been reading all of the posts (sorry I'm in temporary lurkdom again) that mention visual motor integration lately, and I am realizing that we have some very knowledgeable VMI moms here! I know that my 5 y/o ds has huge VMI problems -- scored 13th percentile on the Wechsler when SD tested him for spec ed -- and I am not sure where to turn. He cannot draw to save his life, except for a few figures that we have helped him memorize (he has an xcellent memory and can remember that, for example, a cat is a circle with two triangles at the top, but don't ask him to add a body to that or he's liable to put it between the ears!) His handwriting has gotten a ton better this year (he's soon to finish K) so we know it's not a fine motor problem (his handwriting skills are still weak, but they are at the low end of normal, whereas he basically still scribbles when asked to draw). He practically lies down on his desk to write (that is partly postural too, because he has low trunk tone). On the other hand, he is a good reader.

He gets OT but she is no help at all. I know there is something going on in his brain that the right specialist can help me understand, so that I can help him, but I don't know where to go. I have seen references on here to specialists . . . can someone help me understand the differences between:

    behavioral optometrist
    behavioral opthalmalogist
    developmental opto
    developmental opthal

Which one do I want? Or someone else entirely, like an educational psych?

I am really playing catch-up on this one because we've had so many other concerns with ds. I feel delinquent, and the time is now for me to start learning, before 1st grade is upon us! Thank you.

I think that what you are looking for is a behavioral optometrist. There are few opthamologists who do therapy for ocular motor issues. It is controversial (many opthamologists don't "believe" in vision therapy, apparently, so there aren't many who handle it. DD even had a regular checkup with a ped opthamologist shortly before we discovered this issue, and he didn't find it. It's different from a regular eye exam). For a provider, see www.covd.org.

For my dd, her problem was eye tracking/teaming, a problem of the eyes working together, and it did impact her reading but not her handwriting so much. It's hard to say whether it impacted her drawing (she always seemed to be a good artist, but people kept telling me her drawings were too simple or something). For her, this problem is basically an off-shoot of motor issues connected with sensory processing disorder (vestibular and proprioceptive issues, mild low tone). I don't know much about other types of ocular motor issues, and I'm not even sure what "visual-motor integration" includes!! My SIL (who has no experience with this weird world of wacky issues) would say something simple like "eye hand coordination" but I think it's nowhere near that simple.

I have a few more links on my old computer but I'm not on that right now; you can probably find them just by googling "vision therapy".

    hope this helps

Thanks Beth! That is just what I need to know. Our ped optho did not find anything wrong with Evan's eyes either. I will check out the site you linked to. Feels good to get started.
