Hi. I want to thank everyone who responded to my vent and questions on the IEP meeting that was held for ds last month. As you may recall, I was disappointed because the meeting was very short, it took awhile to find an adequate room, everything was already written up by the teachers and therapists before the meeting even though I had asked for a draft, and my basic impression was that everything was done without my having any input. I decided to try to work within the system and I think that things basically worked out ok. Here's what I did:
(1) When I signed the form stating that I attended the meeting, I added a caveat saying that I didn't have the chance to review the IEP and that I would let the teachers know if I had any comments. The teachers then sent me a copy of the IEP for review along with the copy of "Parents' Rights" which I had requested.
(2) I sent my comments to the teachers, but first I let the OT know what my comments on his section would be, to allow him time to respond and to try to get his support. I also met with the OT at the school just before one of ds's sessions. As a result of my input, the OT agreed with all my requested changes.
(3) I also met with the PT. The school strongly recommends that ds continue the PT sessions twice-a-week. Although I originally didn't want ds to have PT twice-a-week (because ds gets so tired and I thought that pulling him out of class so much would be too much of a distraction for him), I developed a working relationship with the PT, and he agreed to consider my recommendation that the last few minutes of the PT session be for resting so that ds can regain his energy. (I don't know if the PT will agree but at least he said he is considering it, and I plan to re-introduce this suggestion during the next school year.) If PT doesn't agree and if ds still is so tired in school, I guess I can always request that the PT sessions be dropped. right?
Anyhow, in summary, it looks like things worked out ok without my having to contact the District Office. Thanks everyone for your input and thoughts.
