  • Results of IEP followup

Hi. I want to thank everyone who responded to my vent and questions on the IEP meeting that was held for ds last month. As you may recall, I was disappointed because the meeting was very short, it took awhile to find an adequate room, everything was already written up by the teachers and therapists before the meeting even though I had asked for a draft, and my basic impression was that everything was done without my having any input. I decided to try to work within the system and I think that things basically worked out ok. Here's what I did:

    (1) When I signed the form stating that I attended the meeting, I added a caveat saying that I didn't have the chance to review the IEP and that I would let the teachers know if I had any comments. The teachers then sent me a copy of the IEP for review along with the copy of "Parents' Rights" which I had requested.
    (2) I sent my comments to the teachers, but first I let the OT know what my comments on his section would be, to allow him time to respond and to try to get his support. I also met with the OT at the school just before one of ds's sessions. As a result of my input, the OT agreed with all my requested changes.
    (3) I also met with the PT. The school strongly recommends that ds continue the PT sessions twice-a-week. Although I originally didn't want ds to have PT twice-a-week (because ds gets so tired and I thought that pulling him out of class so much would be too much of a distraction for him), I developed a working relationship with the PT, and he agreed to consider my recommendation that the last few minutes of the PT session be for resting so that ds can regain his energy. (I don't know if the PT will agree but at least he said he is considering it, and I plan to re-introduce this suggestion during the next school year.) If PT doesn't agree and if ds still is so tired in school, I guess I can always request that the PT sessions be dropped. right?

Anyhow, in summary, it looks like things worked out ok without my having to contact the District Office. Thanks everyone for your input and thoughts.

Sounds like it turned out really well...m

You're a wonderful advocate for your ds. So ridiculous that they didn't provide you a draft beforehand, but you did the right thing when you noted that on the signature page. What a terrific outcome. I'm glad you're in a position of possibly needing to decrease PT than having to fight just to get it in the first place. Couldn't be better.

Hooray for you and your ds,
    Julie

I'm happy things worked out for Menachem!

As far as PT goes, it's better to keep it on the IEP, and you can always drop it later. Once a service is removed it's very hard to get it put back on (this is what I'm always being advised by our service providers!). It's a fine line for Leela re: PT, she really needs it, but it is physically demanding for her. Leela needs a lot of stretching, the strength building comes after that.

So sorry you had to have a rough experience the first go round, us SNK moms really don't need the extra stress! So happy for you it worked out in the long run!

September we're putting Leela in the afterschool program, I'm a little worried if she'll be able to handle it physically. But, we can no longer afford a babysitter. If it doesn't work I'll try to do a combo of after school and babysitter.

Thanks for the update, I've been thinking about you and wondering how things were going! Hugs! N

Thanks Nancy - Regarding the afterschool program, ds was in it for the first month of this school year, and the teachers recommended that we take him out of it because he was too tired to concentrate. We were lucky that my husband's schedule was sufficiently flexible, so that ds could go home at the regular time. If we had to keep him in the afterschool program, I would have insisted that his teachers allow him to have a snack while he was there and that they shouldn't bother too much with getting him to stay focused.

The only major difficulty in getting ds out of the afterschool program was changing his afternoon bus schedule. We had to keep him in the afterschool program for the full month of September (even though we tried to get him out much sooner) because the agency responsible for the school buses wouldn't allow any changes until the end of the month. We didn't find this out until after many phone calls to that agency.

Thanks for the feedback! We live 3 blocks away, I declined

the bus service because I thought it would be good PT for Leela to walk with her little buddies every day back and forth!

Our afterschool seems pretty flexible, and they've watched Leela grow up - literally! She started taking little play classes at the Y when she was 2. And they have been right there cheering her on the whole time. I think they would follow her lead, and I know she'd certainly go on strike if need be, lol! I'll keep an eye on things, and see what happens, I guess if worse comes to worse I'd go back to hiring a part time sitter.

Happy your hubby was able to adjust his schedule, what a relief for you!

          Thanks again! N
