  • What's PANDAS?

I'm so confused with this tic thing starting? Can anyone help me out today? I need it? Wondering what PANDAS is, if we might have it, and what the treatment is? Thank you

For a while, we thought ds had PANDAS (m) ...

... but in his case, it was a tic disorder/possible Tourette's.

If I remember correctly, PANDAs is Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep.

Essentially, certain kids who are exposed to strep (they don't need to even come down to it) they can develop tics as a result. The way you test for it is to have a blood test to meaure strep titers. If the titers are elevated at the time when the tics are present, it could be PANDAS. The treatment is antiobiotics to get rid of the strep. If the tics are gone after the course of antibiotics, there's a good chance it was PANDAS. To prevent future outbreaks, the kids are usually kept on a preventative low dose of daily antibiotics.

This link provides a lot of info.

In ds's case, we kept testing his blood, and he never had elevated titers. So, for him, it's really just a tic disorder. He is currently on medication to control the tics, and is virtually asymptomatic. If I can help you with any questions, post back or e-mail me. I've been through it all at this point!

    Good luck!
