  • If your child takes meds for mood issues, how often do you see dr?

I was talking to my mom (who is a retired medical person) and she seems to think that our psychiatrist is not good because he only sees dd about every 3-4 mos. He has her on some pretty major meds (lexapro, wellbutrin, and geodon at the moment, but there've been a lot of changes over the last year). The most he ever saw her was monthly, and that for only about 2 mos when he first made a major med change, then immediately went back to 3 mos appointments.

So, how often is often enough?

For the first 5 weeks of treatment, it has been weekly...and will continue to be weekly as meds change until she is stable.
It is a 45 dollar copay...a 240 mile drive round trip, and an entire day each week but we keep going because we are seeing so much improvement. I think we have docs on the opposite end of the spectrum!
i wish ours would see her every two weeks. Yours definitely sounds out of the norm...

      We see ours psych

about every 4 to 5 weeks with a follow up the week after any med change. Out of pocket.

He wants to see her every 3 months at a min. However, recently as we are going through a med change and adding a new one he wants to see her a week after starting the new one, and then 2 weeks after that, and hopefull we go back to a month or even more after this next week.

when dss was on mood stabilizers during puberty, neuropsychiatrist saw us every 6months but we lab orders for blood work monthly for liver checks. if the labs came back elevated then we had to go in for adjustments in between the 6months.

we also had week visits with psychologist for dss for much of his preteen and teen years which he hated. sometimes just him sometimes all of us or any family combo depending on the issues being addressed. however now at 20, he realizes how much the visits helped him.
