  • Can't believe how much the movies cost! (m) ...

We took our 2 older kids (4 and 6) to see Curious George yesterday. My parents LOVE taking the kids to the movies, so I don't go that often. I was SHOCKED at how much it cost yesterday. The tickets alone were $31, and the popcorn & soda was $22. That's over $50!!!!! Holy cow ... good thing I left my twin dd's with my parents ... otherwise I would have had to pay for either 2 more tickets or a babysitter at home.

It really is a shame, that an afternoon out with the kids has to cost so much. Yes, we can afford it, but what about the people who can't? It's a shame! I know I could have passed on the popcorn and soda, but for my kids (and me - LOL!), it's part of the movie experience!

By the way, the movie was absolutely adorable - I highly recommended. There was not a single thing that was inappropriate, potentially scary, questionable, etc. Just a good, wholesome, family movie!

    Was that for a matinee?

Our local theater is $2 for matinee....even for adults and Curious George is playing. Now the nicer, bigger theaters we go to are $5.50 each. Now the popcorn and candy and drinks are outrageous everywhere!!

Yes ... we went to a matinee. It was 3pm on Sunday. Adults are $9.25, kids are $6.25. This is in northern NJ, considered NYC suburbs.

What does it cost at night? That's expensive, but then again I think that the NE US has a higher cost of living and higher pay too than Texas. Probably all the same in comparison!

I had the same reaction when we went to see Curious George last Thursday in downtown Chicago. I took my dd to the matinee and her ticket was $6.50 (for kids ages 2-10) and my "discounted" ticket price was $7.50 (regularly $9.50 during the week, and $10.50 on weekends). Back when I was in college, matinees were $4 and kids were free unless it was a G-rated movie (then they were like $2 or something relatively nominal).

Then throw in the $4.75 for a medium pocorn, $1.75 for gummy bears (or whatever), $2.50 for a medium drink, $10 for parking...

At least she enjoyed the movie.

YIKES! We're in South Jersey and I paid $6.75 for a matinee ticket this past weekend, and that was at a really high end theater that doesn't allow kids under 6, etc. I don't think I'd ever go if I had to pay almost $10 for a matinee ticket - that's just wrong!

We took 2.5 yo ds last night - I agree with your review - AWESOME movie!!! Dh and I thoroughly enjoyed it too. It was ds' first movie and a great experience.

Our theater doesn't charge until 3 so Alex got in free. Dh and I paid $8 a ticket and popcorn/coke was $10. We hadn't been to a theater in 3 years so I was quite shocked how much it cost.

Here in the hinterland, I paid $4.50 per ticket for the matinee, $3.50 for a bottle of water, and $4.00 for a large popcorn. And the movie was excellent! I agree with you, Julie, the popcorn and bevy are a part of the experience.

We don't go that offen. We do have a movie theatre that shows older movie's (not that old they are still not on video yet) and it only costs $3 for adults and children.

The kids payed the same price as an adult and it cost us $36.00 just to get in. The popcorn and pop were another 20 bucks. Not to sound like an old fogey but I remember going to a matinee as a kid and paying 50 cents. What ever happened to those days? Why does it have to cost almost 40 bucks to take your kids to a movie in the afternoon?

We have a small, family -owned theatre near us that charges 2.00 on Tuesday and Thursdays nights. I think it's only 3-4.00 on all the other nights. Surprisingly, they do show current movies (Brokebakc Mountain is there now....has been held over the past two weeks). We'd like to take dd to see Curious George when it comes out there.
