  • bread machine users

I just bought a bread machine at a garage sale this morning. Five bucks, woohoo! But there's no manual and I have no idea how to use one, where to get recipes, etc. Anyone just happen to have a toastmaster bread box model 1142 user manual or know where I can get one? I'm not having any luck finding anything on line. Any good recipe or cookbook suggestions?

I have an Oster and I love it.

I do find recipes online by typing in Oster Bread Maker.

As for the direction book, did you call the company and ask for one? I've done this before and they are happy to send it out.

      Bread machines are pretty easy.

The cycles should be self-explanatory -- they're usually named pretty much what they're for.

In general, you load them liquids first, then flour, then sugar/salt (around the edgse). Make a nest in the middle of the flour, away from the water and salt, to put the yeast in.

      Measuring *does* matter, very much.

Every machine I've ever had has a timer, and the way the timer works is -- when you plug it in and select a cycle, it gives you the time until the bread is done. So if you want to use the timer to have bread in hte morning, you have to do a bit of math and figure "well, I want the bread done at 7:15, so that's 9 hours 20 minutes from now....." and then set the timer up to 9:20.

My favorite cookbook is "The Bread Lovers Bread Machine Cookbook." It has recipes for *Everything* and everything I've tried has come out nicely.

You might try contacting Toastmaster... Here's my sandwich bread recipe.

You might try contacting Toastmaster. I didn't see that product on their website but here's an email address. consumer_relations@toastmaster.com

Before you try any recipes, you should try to determine whether it makes a 1 pound loaf or larger. That will determine which versions of recipes you use.

Here's my sandwich bread recipe for a one pound loaf.

1 egg in measuring cup plus enough water to make 210 mL. (If I make pasta that night, I use pasta water.)

        2 Tbl of Canola oil

1 cup of whole wheat flour

        1 cup of bread flour

        1 tsp. salt

        2 tsp. sugar

        1 tsp yeast

        Use light cycle.

        Have fun!
