  • Poll: How long is a typical shower for you??!! (m)

Since receiving an extra high water bill a couple of weeks ago, I'm trying to figure out ways to conserve water, and I've also been extra conscious of my water usage in general.

Aside from peeing/flushing about 100 times a day (I am bladder-challenged, what can I say?), I realized that I take fairly long showers every morning. I can't help it - I just find it relaxing, (as a SAHM, I don't get much alone time . . . ) and plus I have lots of hair to wash and/or condition - and often lots of hair to shave too, LOL!!

So, I was just wondering how long other people's showers typically last. I'm not going to reveal my number until I see what other people say first.

I take pretty long showers. I'd say on average about 20 minutes. DH is the same and we really like our long showers. To conserve water (and hot water!) we went out and bought military style 3GPM shower heads. It takes some getting used to because the flow is low so it isnt as drenching as a traditional shower head, but it was a compromise to let us both keep taking long showers and ensure nobody runs out of hot water.

Also, I typically only shower every other day (unless I get really grimy) so that saves water also.

      For me, it depends...

On a good day when I have plenty of time and need to shave, about 15-20 minutes. If I don't have a lot of time and don't need to shave, about 5-10 minutes. Like you, as a SAHM, a long, hot shower is pretty much my only alone time all day!

My dh takes ridiculously long showers. He always has. It drives me crazy sometimes! I would say his showers average about 20-30 minutes.

        Usally about

5 to 10 min. I just get in and do what I need to and get out. In our paper there were ways to save.
Dont brush teeth or shave with water running
Flush every 2 or 3 times
Those are the only ones I remember. My bill is only 13.00 a month.

Mine is about 15 minutes, but that's with washing hair. DH takes about 10 minutes. Now, DS#1... he takes about 30 if we don't watch him.

If I'm alone with the kids: 3 minutes

If DH is home or the kids are asleep, maybe 10-12 minutes. I use Pantene shampoo & conditioner in one, and that works for my fine but tangly hair (I hate using a separate conditioner). I try to shave every other day. I love a scalding hot shower, even though it's awful for my skin.

I have a well, so I don't really think about water usage, but my DH tells me I'm very wasteful. But then, he leaves on all the TVs, appliances, lights, etc., and I go around turning those off.

                I'd go w/ 8-10 mins. including shaving. (10mins w/ shaving)

With washing hair, about 10 minutes. I have terrible balance, so when I need to shave I take a bath - there is NO WAY I could shave myself in the shower. I would end up losing at least a unit of blood and STILL being fuzzy!

Probably about 8 minutes. I'm not one to linger in the shower, just don't see the point!

5-8 minutes. A certain 2 yo usually starts flushing the toilet to get my attention by then.

You could also not flush every time you pee unless you have company who cares.

Probably about 5 to 7 minutes; DH is at least 10 to 12 minutes.

Roughly 10 minutes. I spoil myself about once per week and take a 15-minute shower. AND, if I'm rushed for time (ie, if I don't get up when my alarm tells me to!), I can be in and out in five minutes!

                              about 10 minutes

On a side note, I just finished teaching a water cycle unit to my 4th graders - one good conservation tip is to put a brick in your toilet tank to have "less" water used when you flush. Worth a try, I suppose!
