  • Update on DD's High School orientation

    We attended orientation for High School with DD, who is entering 9th grade at a brand new high school. So new that it isn't finished yet.

    Among the more exciting things: The school is beautiful. I hope they finish it in the next two weeks, but it sure looks like they have months to go. Because it is still under construction, tours were not possible. The nurse suggested that we just poke around until someone chased us away. We found the daycare (! - my school certainly didn't have a daycare, but it was nice), art lab, computer lab, and saw about 5% of the school.

    The more concerning things were some of the other students. Such as the young man, standing with his mother at the bus table. The first thing that grabbed your attention was the four inch mohawk atop his 6'3" head. Then the tattoos all over his wrists and forearms, his spiked motorcycle boots, pants belted at the bottom of his butt (how DO they stay on? do they use that sticky spray gymnasts use to keep their leotards from creeping up?). His t-shirt was most alarming "My Other Ride is Your Mother." Is this allowed in school? He was WITH his mother. And he had a baby face and was probably 15 or 16.

    Then there was boy with his pants belted across his upper thighs. So cool. With his mother too. Sort of hopping along and continually bulling his pants back up. Wow.

    DD was a bit creeped out. High School is so much fun. And they didn't have schedules yet, system was down, they will get those ON the first day of school. And then they can try and find their lockers, as they couldn't do that at orientation due to construction. This school is HUGE. At least it is all color-coordinated.

    DD was most impressed that she can begin to take college courses next year. Free tuition, HS credit too, and can graduate with an associates degree already. She seemed much more excited about college than about High School.

    I can hardly wait.

    And some rude old lady here asked about my age! Of all the nerve. Well Susan, you are older than me - I'll be 48 in November - and I'm taking my youngest to kindergarten soon!

    I just don't know what to say...

    my other ride is your mother? seriously?

    Sounds transitional at best, but the fact the dd is focused and excited about courses she can take is encouraging. It's just not the same as it used to be, I guess.

      Surely they won't allow that kind of attire for school, will they??? Did you get a handbook? The 1st kid had 4 violations of our HS dress code - the hair, the boots (no steel, no spikes), the pants (no low riders), the shirt (no rude words/sayings). He would definitely be sent home.

        OK, I am new at this, but found the handbook - online, it was not provided, in fact, not much of anything was provided at "orientation."

        Specifically, the following are prohibited
        at school, school activities, or school-sponsored events:

        1. Clothing which depicts the use of tobacco, alcohol,
        or illegal substances;
        2. Sexually provocative or revealing attire (i.e., bare
        midriff, spaghetti strap tops, low-cut/plunging
        neckline/revealing tops, tube tops, halter tops,
        sagging pants, or any item showing undergarments).
        Skirts, dresses and shorts must be beyond fingertip
        length;
        3. Clothing that may damage school property or other
        persons or be readily used as a weapon (i.e., chains
        hanging from pockets, spiked or studded
        necklaces/jewelry);
        4. Clothing with graphics or wording which depict
        violence in any form;
        5. Any items that are gang related or that display gang
        graffiti (i.e., the wearing or displaying of color rags
        or bandanas);
        6. Eyewear that distorts or masks the pupils;
        7. Sunglasses, except for health purposes;
        8. Hoods worn inside the building.

        And in general anything deemed offensive would not be allowed at school or at school events - so I assume that school orientation is a school event.

        I think I will email the new principal and let her know what I saw and inform her that none of her staff in attendance said a word to either of these kids.

        Jeesh! HS is going to be so much fun......did I mention the men ogling my daugher? They weren't students, they were construction workers!

          And I was shocked that this boy was with his mother. I can't believe she would EVER let her son wear a shirt like that. And this boy even had his SCHOOL PHOTO taken!

            I think. Our school system is today, unfortunately, dedicated to endless writing that teaches nothing practical. I have recognized it for myself, I have been involved in self-education, found a service that helped me to handle current challenges in writing, it’s such a help with essay writing services UK . I’m hoping this service could help students.
