  • Ideas for vacation in mid August

We're thinking this year we want to do a resort type vacation. Somewhere with good weather, a fairly nice hotel and a nice pool are really the only requirements. Golf course is not necessary. I don't think we want to do Florida as we go there during the winter. So, where? What about the Carolinas? Virginia? Is that hurricane season there? Where else would anyone recommend. We're at a loss because we don't normally do this type of vacation. Usually we see the sites. I wouldn't mind doing a combined thing with some site seeing and some relaxation. Last year we went to San Diego and it was great. Tons of pool time for kids and lounging by the pool with DH and also time to enjoy what San Diego has to offer.

Any suggestions for either areas or particular places?

    Don't dis the Dells missy!...m

Seriously, I'll give this some thought. I have a few ideas in mind. I just planned a weekend getaway for my friend to the Dominican Republic. I can handle a family vacation!

Travel Channel showed their top 10 family vacations. I'm going to start there. One of them was this fantastic resort in treehouses. At some point I do have a fishing/summer camp trip planned. It's in Maine. I have 2 friends that do it and reserve their cabin for the next summer before they even leave.

    What about Nantucket?

Can you tell I'm hyped up on caffeine. I am in heaven.

What do you consider "good" weather??.....

August in Virginia is the three H's...Hazy, hot and humid. Not what us Virginians consider nice per se. If you like the water and don't mind the heat, there are a ton of places along the coast of NC/SC, but its mainly a rural area, not many big resorts. You're more likely to find houses to rent (some have pools) in places like Holden Beach (and there are a slew of places on the coast. Not sure if this is what you're looking for if you liked San Diego, not at all like that. We love Charleston SC...its a beautiful area.

        vacation

August is Hurricane season in many places in August so you do take some chances. Including the the carribbean islands and much of the east coast. Myrtle beach has a lot of family type of places as well as North Carolina. You'll fine lots to choose from in this area.

        Best wishes, Melinda

Cape Cod is nice in August. I know of two nice resorts in Chatham, one is the Wequassett Inn Wequassett Inn and the other is the Chatham Bars Inn Chatham Bars Inn. I've been to both, and I think I prefer the Wequassett because the Chatham Bars Inn is right on a main road (in fact, the resort straddles the main road), but both are really nice.

Check out this place. We haven't stayed there as we share a house right down the shore with another family each summer but we've driven through and used the restaurant and it is FABULOUS. Plus the town of Glen Arbor is so quaint and up-northy. Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes are just a couple miles away. You'd all love the guided dune buggy rides.

Lots to do in this area or you can just hang at the pool or beach.

                Hmm...

This may be a bit unusual for you, but it is a cool lodge in the Adirondacks.

How about Vermont, Maine or New Hampshire?

I know there are also a lot of lovely resorts in upstate New York, in the Adirondacks. Cape Cod is also fun.

                        Have you thought about Canada?

we own a condo at Mt Tremblant in Canada (about 1 hour north of montreal).. we went there over the summer once and it was great! swimming, tennis, biking, white water rafting, golf, there is good stuff for kids too. The weather was perfect 70-80 degrees. It is primarily a ski resort but really is 4 seasons - they have top rated golf courses nearby.

                          Another recommendation in Canada...

Here's one we looked at before deciding on a Maine vacation:
                          Fairmont Montebello Quebec

Yes, I've heard very good things about Homestead, and you wouldn't have to deal with flying.

I don't know about KP, but I'd sure like to go here!

For Kirsten, have you thought about:

                              1) A Western ski resort (like somewhere in Park City or maybe Jackson Hole)? Fantastic child care programs, lots of activities, beautiful scenery and hiking, nice pools (depending on the hotel), and cooler weather than at home. We loved Jackson Hole last August.

                              2) Or look at Tenaya Lodge just outside of Yosemite. We were there pre-kids in 2001, and it was great, definitely very kid-friendly.
