  • Another vacation question -- Rhode Island Beaches?

    Hi everyone--

Has anyone ever been to a beach in Rhode Island for a family vacation? We've heard of Misquamicut, and some others, but we don't know too much about it. We stayed at the Watch Hill Inn over 10 years ago (before kids), and it was cramped, and not appropriate for children.

Please let me know if you can recommend a nice beach, and if you know of a hotel/motel/inn, that would be great.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Ellen,
I live about a mile from the Middletown (Newport), RI beaches. It's beautiful here in the summer and I highly recommend it. Funny enough I can't speak much to the southern RI beaches but another idea would be Block Island. You could stay in Newport & take the ferry out to block island for just a day trip. There are a lot of cute bed & breakfasts right in downtown Newport, pretty expensive in the summer though. Slightly less expensive larger hotels/motels in Middletown (10 min drive to downtown Newport & where the beaches are). If you want to email me & tell me what kind of hotel you're thinking of & what you & your family like to do I can give you more ideas.

Newport = very pricey. But Matunuck and west is usually fairly affordable. Check out VRBO.com and Craigslist for affordable rental options.

DH and I stayed at Block Island years ago...

        pre-kids.

It was so beautiful and great, though the water was cold but that's always the case in the NE.

The key is to be near the beach if you have kids. We stayed up the hill a few miles and had to bike about 10 minutes to the beach. Not sure I'd do that with kids.

I didn't feel it was crowded at the beach.

          Hi Margaret--

Thanks so much! I will e-mail you privately for more info. I am definitely interested in the less expensive larger hotels/motels -- money is a bit tight.

Thanks in advance for your help!

My sister lives in Misquamicut, she recommends the Pleasant View Inn. We have used their pool and beach access. I have never stayed there but it looks nice. My kids love the little water slides and go carts down the road. It is also 5 min away from watch hill.
