that you ordered online--is the customer supposed to pay for the shipping to return the thing? I didn't see anything in the paperwork that led me to think they pay for it but it cost me $5 to ship it back and feel like they should pay for it since it was defective. Anyone have experience with this?

I'll bet they'll pay return shipping...
especially for something defective. Or, depending on how big the item is, they may just tell you to keep it and refund your money. I ordered cabinet pulls from them once and the centers were a different measurement than what was stated in the catalog (so their fault) and they told me just to keep them, as opposed to them paying return postage.

If it was their fault it had to be returned, then I think you can ask customer service if they would credit you for the return shipping. If you had just changed your mind, you would be responsible for return shipping. Good luck! They seem like a good company for customer service, from my experience with them.

Do those things work? I bought a cheap set from Target last year (I think it was) and they didn't work at all, fell right off the mantle with the weight of a stocking. I returned them. I wish I could find some that work. Maybe my mantle is shaped wrong for them.
